Cities across Australia are implementing new public transport projects to transform the structure of urban areas by changing the way people live, work and access education, shopping and recreational hubs.

Waters Economics team members analysed the urban renewal potential of transport projects. The studies assessed the wider land use, redevelopment and public domain benefits of transport investment, using scenario-modelling techniques to illustrate the long-term urban renewal that would result from transport investment.

The Sydney Light Rail Urban Renewal strategy was well received as a valuable input to the Sydney Light Rail Strategic Plan. In particular, it was considered to demonstrate the wider urban domain and renewal potential, which is often difficult to capture, but is an important complement to projected transport benefits.
